Australia's captain Set to Play a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.

There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in Perth.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not just the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. If not, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
